‍Hunger Action Month campaign calls on West Central Texas to come together to help provide one million meals in September

ABILENE, Texas — The Million Meal Challenge begins today.

As Hunger Action Month gets underway across the country, the Food Bank of West Central Texas is challenging individuals, families, businesses, churches and community organizations across the region to come together around one goal: help provide one million meals for West Central Texans facing hunger by September 30.

The month-long Million Meal Challenge is the Food Bank's largest community-wide effort of Hunger Action Month, giving everyone in West Central Texas a way to take part through donating, volunteering, fundraising and spreading the word.

“One community. One million meals. That's what we're asking West Central Texas to accomplish together,” said Brandon Forrest, President and CEO of the Food Bank of West Central Texas. “No one person, business or organization has to provide a million meals. But when each of us does what we can, those individual actions can add up to something extraordinary for our neighbors.”

Hunger Action Month is a nationwide movement held each September to raise awareness of hunger and inspire people to take action in their communities.

Here in West Central Texas, that need is significant. The Food Bank serves neighbors throughout a 13-county region through a network of more than 150 partner agencies, food pantries and meal sites.

Throughout September, the Million Meal Challenge will turn community action into measurable impact toward the one-million-meal goal.

Four Ways to Join the Challenge

Donate
Every $10 donated can help provide approximately 50 meals for neighbors across West Central Texas.

Volunteer
Individuals, families, coworkers and groups can give their time to help the Food Bank sort, pack and prepare food for distribution throughout the region.

Start a Fundraiser
Community members, businesses, churches, schools and organizations can create their own fundraiser and rally friends, customers, coworkers and others to help reach the one-million-meal goal.

Spread the Word
Supporters can help grow the movement by sharing the Million Meal Challenge and encouraging others to participate throughout September.

The Food Bank will provide campaign updates throughout the month as West Central Texas moves toward the goal.

“This isn't just the Food Bank's challenge. It belongs to our entire community,” Forrest said. “Every meal represents a neighbor, and every action gets us closer to making sure our neighbors have the food they need.”

The Million Meal Challenge runs through September 30.
